Ernst Gottlieb von Steudel was engaged for most of his life as a physician in the German state of Württemberg, but he also found time to work actively in the field of botany. He was one of the principal founders of the Württembergischer botanische Reiseverein, an organization for the promotion of botanical exploration and discovery, and he also authored important books in the subject. Nomenclatur Botanicus seu: Synomia plantarum universalis, published in two volumes (1821-1824) was an alphabetical listing of more than 3300 genera and nearly 40,000 species of plants and represented Steudel’s ambition to present a complete index of all of the genera and species known to botanists.
